Incidence of surgical site infection in dogs undergoing soft tissue surgery: risk factors and economic impact

Abstract: ObjectivesTo determine (1) the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) in patients undergoing soft tissue surgery at a veterinary teaching hospital and to study (2) and describe the main risk factors associated with SSI and (3) assess the economic impact of SSI.DesignProspective cohort study.SettingVeterinary teaching hospital.Participants184 dogs undergoing soft tissue surgery during a 12-month period (October 2013 to September 2014).Primary outcome measureSurgical site infection.ResultsOut of the 184 pati… Show more

“…Surgical site infections of 2.5 to 18.5 % are reported in small animal surgery, with variations associated with the type of surgery [65][66][67][68][69]. Undernutrition, emergency surgery and prolonged surgical times have been described as risks factors for surgical site infections in both human and veterinary medicine [67,68,[70][71][72][73]. In contrast, surgical time did not affect the development of surgical site complications in this study.…”

“…While the degree of contamination is considered significant risk for surgical site infection, other variables have also been identified as risk factors. Risk factors previously identified include patient signalment, time under anesthesia, surgical time, specific patient comorbidities and American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) status, and complications under anesthesia (2,(12)(13)(14).…”
