Incidence of intraspinal abnormalities in congenital scoliosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis on the overall incidence of intraspinal abnormalities in patients with congenital scoliosis (CS) and potential influencing factors. Methods We searched three large electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library) for potentially relevant studies. The quality of the included studies was assessed independently by two authors using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) criteria. Data on the number of CS patients, n… Show more

“…[ 35 ] These vertebral abnormalities can be diagnosed by antenatal ultrasound from the 12 th week of gestation or by magnetic resonance imaging. [ 36 ] According to several authors,[ 33 37 38 ] these congenital scoliosis are associated in 15%–43% of cases with intraspinal abnormalities that we have not looked for.…”

“…[ 32 ] Their prevalence is 1 per 1000–2000 live births, and the risk of occurrence is linked to environmental or genetic factors according to several authors. [ 32 33 34 ] According to Mackel et al ., more than half of these congenital forms are diagnosed after the age of 3 years and a quarter in the 1 st year of life, which agrees with our data. [ 32 ] They are dominated by the hemi-vertebrae such as in the series of Zhang et al .…”

“…Among congenital spinal malformations are kyphosis and scoliosis, for example. According to Wang et al (44), congenital scoliosis is a curvature of the spine resulting from abnormal vertebral development, with an incidence in the general population of approximately 1/1,000 to 1/2,000, also resulting from environmental and genetic factors. Among the environmental factors, one can also consider the consumption of drugs and teas, for example.…”

“…Врожденные деформации позвоночника (ВДП) у детей относят к наиболее тяжелой и инвалидизирующей патологии осевого скелета. Распространенность ВДП составляет около 0,5-1,0 на 1000 новорожденных [1][2]. Аномалии позвонков возникают из-за сбоев в процессах формирования или сегментации, которые происходят в первые 6 нед.…”
