Incidence of aneurysm formation after dacron patch aortoplasty repair for coarctation of the aorta: Long-term results and assessment utilizing magnetic resonance angiography with three-dimensional surface rendering

Abstract: Magnetic resonance angiography with three-dimensional surface rendering provides noninvasive, radiation-free and contrast agent-free high resolution images of the thoracic aorta. These images can be reviewed and have three-dimensional form and perspective. These techniques were preferred over invasive angiography by surgeons and clinicians as definitive, risk-free procedures before surgical intervention.

“…2 Among our COA patients, the 15-year survival rate after operation was 92%, which is in agreement with the 90% consistently reported. 8,13,23 An accompanying VSD reduces survival considerably. 24 In our hierarchy, pa- tients with COA and significant VSD were classified in the VSD group.…”

“…The aortic coarctation aortoplasty employing the Dacron patch was considered effective and safe by Venturini et al [20], with the occurrence of aneurismal formation in only one of the 60 patients. On the other hand, Parks et al [21], in 39 patients being followed-up, 10 presented aortic rupture, discontinuing this technique. Silva [22] emphasized the good results achieved in 3 patients followed-up for 30 years using pediculate pericardium, with no aneurismal formation.…”

“…Coarctation of the aorta-surgical treatment has provided successful mostly in the last decade. (Kouchoukos et al, 2003;Schuster & Gross, 1962;Parks et al, 1995;Bell et al, 2003). The formation of aortic aneurysms associated with coarctation of the aorta is rare (Parks et al, 1995;Bell et al, 2003) There are currently endovascular techniques for the correction of aortic aneurysms associated or not to aortic coarctation.…”
