Abstract: In this paper we address the issue of content availability in p2p file sharing systems. Content availability is a public good: the copying of a file by one peer does not prevent another peer also from copying it; but contributing files to the common pool is costly. The asymptotic analysis of certain public good models for p2p file sharing suggests that when the aim is to maximize social welfare, a fixed contribution scheme in terms of the number of files shared per unity of time can be asymptotically optimal a… Show more

“…In the experimental set-up we do not consider a large 7 presence of other MNs under the same AP since air-link congestion is not relevant to the handoff measurements. Delays due to collisions, backoff, propagation delay and AP queuing delay are irrelevant since they usually are on the order of micro-seconds under normal conditions.…”

“…Incentives for cooperation are also not considered since they are a standard problem for any system using some form of cooperation (e.g., file sharing) and represent a separate research topic [4], [5], [6], [7], [8].…”

“…Rings construction increases the delay before starting downloads and imposes a communication overhead. Antoniadis et al (2005) address content availability problem and proposed a fixed contribution scheme that encourages peers to stay longer in the system. A newcomer must advertise a minimum number of files and effectively share them when asked for.…”

“…Two prominent forms of soft incentive schemes that have been used widely 3,4,18,19,20,15,11,21,22 are peer-approved and service-quality. They both use rating methods to assign points to each peer in the system according to its cooperation level.…”
