Aim To examine situations of vulnerability to human papillomavirus in the social representations of young women. Background Human papillomavirus is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted infections among women and constitutes a serious health problem among youth. This problem is embedded in psychosocial issues that promote situations of vulnerability and affect attitudes and behaviour in relation to prevention. Methods Qualitative study based on the theory of social representations, conducted among 64 female students in a high school in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The study used personal semi‐structured interviews, with a lexical analysis by Alceste 2010 software. Findings The inefficacy of information on the human papillomavirus pointed out individual and social vulnerabilities, and showed relationships between the difficulty of access and the perception of low quality in public health services, which also promotes institutional vulnerability. Discussion The representation of vulnerability to human papillomavirus infection is associated, not only with individual behaviours related to sexuality and gender identity but also to social and institutional conditions involving insufficient information and low quality of and ineffective access to public health services. Conclusion Situations of vulnerability of young women to human papillomavirus infection influence ways of thinking and acting, when they generate feelings and behaviours that put them at risk. The social representations provided knowledge about how the participants appropriated consensual and reified universes in relation to vulnerability, influencing care and awareness of prevention. Implication for nursing and health policy Situations of vulnerability, whether individual, social or institutional, warrant the attention of nurses and should be prioritized as public health policy goals to reduce the number of cases of human papillomavirus infection among younger women.

Objetivo: conhecer os fatores que se associam ao conhecimento sobre o exame de Papanicolaou em mulheres usuárias do Serviço Público Municipal de Saúde. Método: estudo quantitativo e transversal, realizado no interior de São Paulo com 180 mulheres. Utilizou-se instrumento para caracterizar o perfil e verificar o conhecimento. Realizou-se análise estatística descritiva, teste qui-quadrado para análise bivariada e regressão logística binária para multivariada. Resultados: as mulheres possuíam +/-43,6 anos, a maior parte tinha trabalho remunerado, cor parda, companheiro, não utilizava preservativo, não apresentava queixas ginecológicas e realizava o exame em tempo adequado. O conhecimento foi satisfatório quanto ao local e à forma de realização do exame e insatisfatório quanto à população-alvo e periodicidade. Conclusão: associaram-se ao conhecimento satisfatório as variáveis cor da pele branca, renda familiar, queixa ginecológica e realizar o exame em tempo adequado; mulheres com renda familiar mensal de dois ou mais salários mínimos apresentaram mais chances de ter conhecimento adequado sobre o exame de Papanicolaou.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the type that most affects women worldwide, in Brazil is the most frequent, estimated for the 2018-2019 biennium, 59,700 new cases, while cervical cancer is the fourth most common type. among women, with an estimated 2018-2019 of 16,370 new cases for each year of the biennium, thus the aim of this study was to promote educational interventions aimed at the prevention and early detection of breast and cervical cancer in religious space. Materials and Methods: Action research, using interview and culture circle with 12 evangelical women in a city in the countryside of Maranhão, Brazil. Culture circles promoted dialogues on the themes: what is breast and cervical cancer; disease severity; prevention and diagnosis and were organized to include the reception, coding, decoding and synthesis of the meetings. Results: The following categories emerged: Initial impressions of culture circles; Cancer knowledge; Feelings related to cancer; tests for the diagnosis of breast and cervical cancer; and Decoding knowledge and attitudes about cancer. Discussion: It is possible to prevent breast and cervical cancer by decoding knowledge and attitudes, and it is necessary to adopt strategies that encourage women to seek health services not only in the presence of complaints, but in a preventive and self-care perspective. Conclusions: The dialogue enabled critical unveiling, promoting the adoption of prevention and health promotion practices.
