In vivo evaluation of antiseptics and disinfectants on control of Caseous Lymphadenitis: clinical, haematological, serological and microbiological monitoring

Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the efficacy of iodine tincture at 10% and sodium hypochlorite at 2.5% applied into the abscess of animals affected by Caseous Lymphadenitis (CL). Eighteen ewes were used, assorted into three groups: one treated with iodine tincture at 10% (IT), another one with sodium hypochlorite at 2.5% (SH) and the last group underwent the conventional treatment (CT). Conventional treatment was based on surgical drainage and chemical cauterization of the lesion with iodine t… Show more

“…These authors also described adverse effects as a painful response induced by the use of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and increased inflammatory reaction caused by the use of 10% iodine tincture. By the other hand, in our study APDT lead a complete cure in much less time and with no adverse effects than the treatments proposed by Santiago et al [5].…”

“…Different results were observed by Santiago et al [5], which studied the healing time of CLA abscesses using two antiseptic solutions: 10% iodine tincture and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite applied inside the abscesses and compared them with a surgical drainage of abscesses as a control group. The 10% iodine tincture group showed a mean time of 51.33 days for complete healing, followed by 2.5% sodium hypochlorite group with 52.5 days and the control group with 87.67 days.…”

“…CL is characterized by the development of granulomas in the lymph nodes and in organs such as the spleen, lungs, liver, and kidneys (Dorella et al, 2006). The disease is associated with a decrease in the production of wool and meat, as well as a high cost of treatment (Santiago et al, 2013).…”
