Abstract: Mucuna pruriens (L). Dc is a plant of the Fabaceae family, commonly known as velvet bean, itchy bean, chiporro bean, mucuna, among others. This plant has several medicinal properties, including its potential to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). International studies have shown that this plant surpasses the benefits of the substance levodopa in the treatment of PD. Taking into account that nerve cells are highly sensitive to oxidative substances, this study evaluated the antioxidant activity of mucuna and compare… Show more

“…Velvet beans seeds have been reported to be consumed as food and also has a widespread utilization as a traditional remedy for the treatment of several human ailments (Longhi et al 2011). Horseradish seeds also have been exploited for both therapeutic and pharmacologic purposes (Verma et al 2009).…”

“…Mucuna pruriens is mainly used to balance vata and pitta, as both kapha and ama are increased in excess by this herb. Typical doses of the powdered Mucuna pruriens range from 1.5 to 6 grams [27]. Alkaloids derived from M. pruriens seeds were found to stimulate spermatogenesis and overall weight of the testicles and accessory glands in the male albino rat [28].…”

“…The black color of the grain is related to the amount of 6.5% of varied phenolic compounds and tannins, presenting properties anticarcinogenic, in vitro antioxidant [9], anti-lipid peroxidation activities [10], hypoglycemic [3,11], hypolipidemic [5], diuretic and antimicrobial activity [4,12] and antigen against snake venom [13], therefore potentially beneficial to health [14].…”
