In Vitro evaluation of antibacterial activities and anti-inflammatory effects of Bifidobacterium spp. addressing acne vulgaris

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect of Bifidobacterium spp. In the first part of the study, the antibacterial activities of live and sonicated cells, from a total of 23 Bifidobacterium species, on the growth of 5 different strain of Staphylococcus aureus. Six strains, of sonicated Bifidobacterium, exhibited antibacterial activity against staphylococci samples, and seven Bifidobacterium strains exhibited antibacterial activity on the growth of S. aureus S.P… Show more

“…The most commonly used and studied species of probiotics belong to the genera of Lactobacillus , Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces . They can balance intestinal microbiota by fermenting oligosaccharides not digested and absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract and by adversely affecting other bacteria, inhibit a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms in vitro and in vivo , and exert direct effects on intestinal epithelial barrier function evidenced by decreased intestinal permeability and enhanced intestinal epithelial resistance . Besides, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus can induce the generation of regulatory dendritic cells and CD4 + Foxp3 + T cells (regulatory T cells), and abundance of these regulatory cells results in hyporesponsiveness of B cells and T helper cells without apoptosis along with the suppression of cytokine production .…”

“…In addition to clinical trials, research in this field utilizes a range of non‐invasive methods including modern surface tests (e.g. 3D image analysis or non‐invasive ultraviolet light), biometric tests assessing sebum levels on the skin, in addition to traditional in vitro and in vivo techniques and patient‐reported questionnaires …”

“…3D image analysis or noninvasive ultraviolet light), biometric tests assessing sebum levels on the skin, in addition to traditional in vitro and in vivo techniques and patient-reported questionnaires. [8][9][10][11][12][13] With so many approaches and outcomes measures being used to assess antiacne dermocosmetics it makes it difficult to make direct comparisons between treatment options, and in spite of the move towards randomized controlled trials there remains a lack of evidence in this area. 6 Throughout this review we have included additional details on the studies discussed in Table 1.…”
