Imrad Usage in Latvian Language Research Papers

Abstract: Within the scientific discourse it is commonplace to write articles based on the IMRAD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion). This structure is typical for the natural sciences (STEM) but scientists in other disciplines are also often required to use it. This paper looks at scientific texts in Latvian published from 2008 to 2018. The basis for this research project is a corpus of 758 scientific articles from natural sciences, engineering and technology, social sciences, humanities and arts… Show more

“…This supports the assertion that providing students with sufficient guidance on appropriate abstract structure is imperative (Moerdisuroso & Kherid, 2020). It also highlights the need for tailored support in different faculties, as emphasized by Dubova et al (2020), Oriokot et al (2011, and others who stress the importance of recognizing and addressing disciplinespecific challenges.…”

“…Specifically for abstract writing, IMRaD has been widely used; it enables readers to quickly understand the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions of a research study. Additionally, IMRaD has been used as a norm for abstract structure in academic journals, particularly those in the social sciences (Dubova et al, 2020). However, the extent to which undergraduate students implement IMRaD structure in their thesis abstracts remains unclear Considering the significance of abstracts in research papers and the importance of IMRaD as a framework for organizing information, it is imperative to examine the frequency with which undergraduate students are incorporating the IMRaD structure in their thesis abstracts.…”

“…The influence of the factors mentioned in the publications of Latvian scientific articles can be observed in the widespread application of the IMRaD structure, not only in natural science and its related fields but also in social sciences and even in the humanities. In these disciplines and their subbranches, there is a relatively large diversity in terms of article macrostructure, which is often determined by external factors like publication conditions, and sub-branch traditions (Dubova, Egle, Proveja, 2020). The topic for this article was determined for several reasons:…”
