Improving the quality of surface in polishing process with the magnetic abrasive powder polishing (MAPP) by use of ultrasonic oscillation of work-piece on a CNC table

Abstract: In this research work, polishing inside, outside and over the cylindrical parts has been done by using a completely new and innovative method. The work-pieces have been placed on a two-axis Cartesian CNC Table for polishing operations. The Magnetic Rotary Head continuously changes its rotation direction from CW to CCW and CCW to CW and meanwhile the part begin to oscillate up-and-down under a High Frequency (20 kHz) conditions. The Frequency of changing direction From CW to CCW and CCW to CW is one of the impo… Show more

“…Sensor wire According to equation (12), the sensitivity curves of polishing vibration RMS value to spindle speed, compression depth, feed rate, and granularity were obtained, as shown in Figure 9. Based on the analysis of relative sensitivity, the feed rate is not further selected within the process parameter range.…”

“…The system can make the workpiece obtain at least 1µm amplitude horizontal vibration and finish the workpiece with HRC61 hardness to nanometer order in a shorter time. Mirian [5] developed the magnetic abrasive finishing process by using high-frequency oscillation on the cylindrical pieces. The cylindrical piece was directly connected to the special designed ultrasonic horn to gain the vertical high frequency oscillation.…”

“…In the precision lapping process, PTR occurs due to the removal of materials from the pole tip (NiFe/NiCoFe). Studies have mainly focused on the correlation between PTR and mechanical parameters, such as load, lapping time, diamond size, abrasive mechanism/model, and test methods (Goldade & Bhushan, 2002; Scott & Bhushan, 2002; Zhong, 2002; Kwon et al, 2005; Ortiz-Merino & Todd, 2005; Shi et al, 2005; Mirian et al, 2011). Besides mechanical factors, the choice of lubricant plays an important role for PTR and surface finish.…”
