Improving the evidence for indicator condition guided HIV testing in Europe: Results from the HIDES II Study – 2012 – 2015

Abstract: Background It is cost-effective to perform an HIV test in people with specific indicator conditions (IC) with an undiagnosed HIV prevalence of at least 0.1%. Our aim was to determine the HIV prevalence for 14 different conditions across 20 European countries. Methods Individuals aged 18–65 years presenting for care with one of 14 ICs between January 2012 and June 2014 were included and routinely offered an HIV test. Logistic regression assessed factors associated with t… Show more

“…During these contacts, an HIV test was rarely offered by the healthcare provider even if the patients reported HIV indicators. Several diseases or clinical symptoms have been highlighted as HIV indicators since the undiagnosed HIV prevalence among the patients who suffer from them was > 0.1%, thus justifying routine HIV testing [10][11][12]. Identifying these missed opportunities to offer a test and quantifying the missed opportunities could guide policy makers in extending HIV testing guidelines.…”

“…ICT is recommended by European HIV testing guidelines and in many national testing guidelines [ 7 , 8 ]. Additionally, several tools to facilitate the practical implementation of ICT have been developed, tested and proved to be very successful in supporting routine ICT [ 3 , 4 , 9 ]. However, ICT is still not systematically and fully implemented across all relevant sectors and health care settings in Europe, resulting in many missed opportunities for diagnosis.…”
