Abstract: • PurposeThe goal of the research is to explore whether the use of higher-level semantic features can help us build better SOM representation as measured from a human-centered perspective. We also explore an automatic evaluation method that utilizes human expert knowledge encapsulated in the structure of traditional textbooks to determine map representation quality.• Design/methodology/approach Two types of document representations involving semantic features have been explored: 1) using only one individual se… Show more

“…In support of this, research project by Bless et al (2008) indicated that domain knowledge and knowledge sources could be combined into a knowledge‐subject mapping mechanism to derive map‐oriented knowledge subject categories. In support of this, Lin et al (2011) from a human‐centered perspective proposed higher‐level semantic features can help to build better self‐organizing map representation. The approach availability of self‐organizing knowledge map may help the enhancement of the current PIKIP DL .…”

Second, for the data processing mechanism, the PIKIP DL not only utilizes Apriori mechanism that most data mining mechanism adopts (e.g.…”

“…These systems demonstrate the potential for a system to offer high-level assessment and feedback, but they are tied to a certain knowledge base and a certain set of resources. Even when automating the process of creation (Lin et al, 2011), the product is a single set of content organized by the ITS developers. Many instructors desire this type of "out-of-the-box" functionality.…”

“…U-Matrix Clustering Map Figure 12 is a combined visualization of the U-Matrix and feature component planes selected. This structure assists in explaining the clustering structure and similarities between the variables (Lin, Brusilovsky and He, 2011). A darker shade corresponds to larger ordinal values, a gray shade represents medium ordinal values, and a lighter shade represents low ordinal values of operation sequence.…”
