Urban complexity can be measured by the numerical and spatial diversity of activities in a territory. Just as biodiversity can be measured in a natural ecosystem, diversity indices can be applied to urban settings. Urban diversity presents higher values in areas where there is a greater number of (economic, institutional, and social) activities with a high degree of differentiation between them. This study seeks to investigate the potential of applying an urban diversity index in a specific case study: namely, the city of Barcelona (Spain), known for the orthogonal grid plan of its Eixample district. Results show that the municipal territory of Barcelona as a whole is characterized by highly differentiated spaces according to their urban diversity values. Specifically, it is the Eixample district that presents the highest values of urban diversity, reflecting the densification of its morphology and its urban commercial policies.

The sustainable functioning of the transport system requires solving the problems of identifying and classifying road users in order to predict the likelihood of accidents and prevent abnormal or emergency situations. The emergence of unmanned vehicles on urban highways significantly increases the risks of such events. To improve road safety, intelligent transport systems, embedded computer vision systems, video surveillance systems, and photo radar systems are used. The main problem is the recognition and classification of objects and critical events in difficult weather conditions. For example, water drops, snow, dust, and dirt on camera lenses make images less accurate in object identification, license plate recognition, vehicle trajectory detection, etc. Part of the image is overlapped, distorted, or blurred. The article proposes a way to improve the accuracy of object identification by using the Canny operator to exclude the damaged areas of the image from consideration by capturing the clear parts of objects and ignoring the blurry ones. Only those parts of the image where this operator has detected the boundaries of the objects are subjected to further processing. To classify images by the remaining whole parts, we propose using a combined approach that includes the histogram-oriented gradient (HOG) method, a bag-of-visual-words (BoVW), and a back propagation neural network (BPNN). For the binary classification of the images of the damaged objects, this method showed a significant advantage over the classical method of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) (79 and 65% accuracies, respectively). The article also presents the results of a multiclass classification of the recognition objects on the basis of the damaged images, with an accuracy spread of 71 to 86%.

Increasing urbanization, climate change, and plant disease pose accumulative threats to city and community-owned forests (CCF). This requires the forest to adapt to new climatic conditions to continuously provide essential recreational functions for the urban population in the future. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for CCF as a place to meet, play sports, and relax. However, our knowledge of challenges in combining climate change adaptation and the increased number of visits and demand for recreation in CCF management is yet limited. In this study, we, for the first time, interviewed 16 stakeholders from different backgrounds about their opinions on climate change adaptation (CCA) of CCF, its importance as a recreational space, and conflicts between the two fields of action that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected that comparing perspectives from different stakeholder groups can lead to improved reflection and strengthen the sustainable management of the CCF through knowledge-based and participative decision-making. Using semi-structured interviews and qualitative data analytics with MAXQDA software, we found that stakeholders particularly highlighted the importance of the recreational function of the CCF during the pandemic. At the same time, the behavior of visitors was criticized. We identified that functional conflicts between the need for relaxation and essential functions for CCA of the CCF have increased during the pandemic. These include other biodiversity and protective functions. The interviewees, therefore, suggested enhancing the local population's communication and education. Further, the possibility of increased visitor guidance has been discussed. It has been identified that more research and location-adjusted planning are needed to evaluate the use of non-native species for the urban forest’s climate change adaptation.
