Importance of zwitterionic incorporation into polymethacrylate-based hydrogels for simultaneously improving optical transparency, oxygen permeability, and antifouling properties

Abstract: The introduction of zwitterionic SBMA into HEMA hydrogels enables to improve optical transparency, oxygen permeability, and antifouling property for contact lenses-based ophthalmic applications.

“…The FTIR spectra of PHEMA and PHEMA/BA composite hydrogels were displayed in Figure . As demonstrated here, several absorption bands at 3429 (OH stretching vibration), 2958 and 2886 (CH 2 antisymmetric vibration), 1721 (CO stretching vibration), 1155 (COC antisymmetric vibration), and 1075 cm −1 (COC stretching vibration) are characteristic peaks of PHEMA hydrogel . On the other hand, all PHEMA/BA composite hydrogels are similar absorption peaks in the FTIR spectra and in this these peaks are overlapped with peaks from the PHEMA.…”

“…The reduction of platelet deposition associated with SB block copolymer conjugation are likely related to changes of the surface properties and the reduced protein (e.g., fibrinogen) adsorption, as confirmed in our previous study. 52 The antifouling mechanisms associated with zwitterion-modified surfaces have also been extensively considered in terms of surface property changes (interactions with water and salts) in previous publications 53,54 while the antifouling effectiveness on the SB modified surface could be variable based upon salt concentration, buffer composition, solution pH level and temperature. 55,56 The majority of studies developing thromboresistant coatings have focused on a single material and application.…”

“…The collagen capsules of the tissue gradually form at the interface between tissue and implant materials due to the inflammatory response. Masson trichrome stain, which stains collagen blue, was used to evaluate capsule formation after subcutaneous implantation for 1 month ( Figure 8 ) [ 53 ]. As shown in Figure 8 B,C, crosslinked electrospun gelatin scaffold was still nondegraded, whereas the Gel–HPA fibrous hydrogel was almost entirely biodegraded after in vivo implantation for one month.…”
