Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the importance of wild bee and feral honeybee visits for cotton production on conventional and organic farms. Experiments were conducted in Brazil, on a conventional cotton farm in Mato Grosso state in the Amazon biome and on an organic farm in Paraíba state in the Caatinga biome. On the conventional farm, bee assemblage and cotton production were measured near to and far from natural vegetation. Bee richness, fibre fraction, seed number and yield (Kg/ha) were higher by 57.14, 1.95… Show more

“…No caso da produção do algodão na região Nordeste, mesmo nas áreas não agroecológicas o uso de inseticidas é bastante reduzido, principalmente devido ao custo. Sabe-se que os visitantes florais mais frequentes e os principais polinizadores dos algodoeiros são espécies de abelhas inclusive em boa parte das regiões produtoras do Brasil (Pires et al, 2014).…”

“…Alternatively, crops produced through organic farming have clearly shown to be having higher micronutrient and phytochemical profile compared to that of chemical farming. Hela Suwaya further states that toxin induced disturbance of insect pollination will prevent the production of fiber profile in the food crop [29,30]. Apart from that, lack of food diversity, application of artificial chemical food processing methods (including blending instead of traditionally used pounding) and improper culinary practices (such as deviating away the traditional culinary preparations and improper spicing of food) collectively add to the burden of sub optimal nutritional status in the community.…”

“…Although cotton is an autogamous species, meaning it has the ability to self-pollinate, it can still benefit from insect-mediated pollination. Other autogamous crops such as coffee, canola, and soybean see considerable gains when visited by bees [ 2 ]. For example, coffee showed increases in yield from 14% to 50% when surrounding pollinator-friendly vegetation was a source for pollinators in coffee [ 3 ].…”
