Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

Abstract: region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

“…Similarly, tree-dominated measurements will determine γ and |V ub | with much better precision [1,2,35], which will translate to an uncertainty of K due to CKM elements comparable to the current SM CKM fit in table 4. Finally, different lattice QCD calculations of B K obtain different results for its uncertainty [36][37][38], which, however, do not exceed the 2-3% percent level and are thus subdominant in the error budget of K .…”

“…Part of the SM uncertainty in the K prediction is parametric, i.e., due to the relatively poor knowledge of some of the CKM parameters, most notably A (or equivalently |V cb |). This knowledge will be substantially improved by future measurements at Belle II and LHCb [1,2], which will hopefully also resolve tensions between inclusive and exclusive determinations of |V cb | and |V ub | [3].…”

“…The signal yield of D + → φπ + decays in 50 fb −1 of data collected with an upgraded detector is predicted to be around 500 million [59]. It seems likely that insights into CP violation in charm decays will soon be within reach.…”

“…The two final states Whether a reconstructed B 0 candidate was a B 0 or B 0 at production is determined with flavour tagging algorithms which exploit either that b quarks are mainly produced in bb pairs at the LHC or the creation of dd pairs in the B 0 hadronisation or strong decays of excited B mesons [5]. The hadronisation of the remaining d quark can result in a charged pion or proton, the charge of which 1 The boost is sufficient to result in a measurable displacement of the D decay vertices from the B decay vertex.…”

“…The LHCb collaboration performed many CP violation measurements using LHC Run I data with great success [1]. While measurements of the "golden modes" need data from Run II to achieve significant improvements, there are still interesting analyses with Run I data to be performed to improve our understanding of CP violation.…”
