Abstract: Rotation schedules for residents must balance individual preferences, compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education guidelines, and institutional staffing requirements. Automation has the potential to improve the consistency and quality of schedules. We designed a novel rotation scheduling tool, the Automated Internal Medicine Scheduler (AIMS), and evaluated schedule quality and resident satisfaction and perceptions of fairness after implementation. We compared schedule uniformity, fulfi… Show more

“…Moreover, an algorithmic system executing simpler tasks increases the perception of procedural justice, whereas in tasks that are perceived as being very complex and requiring so-called human skills (e.g., compassion or creativity), decisions involving a manager were perceived as fairer than decisions made by algorithms alone (Nagtegaal, 2021). Finally, Howard et al (2020) show that their algorithmic scheduling system for resident doctors increased the perception of fairness in these residents.…”

“…Additionally, some individuals evaluate AI competency as superior to human experts. For example, computer science graduate students favor an image processing agent over an expert graphic artist (Williams et al, 2019), and medical residents prefer when an AI schedules their rotations (F. M. Howard et al, 2020).…”
