Impedance cardiography: Recent advancements

Abstract: The aim of this paper is the presentation of recent advancements in impedance cardiography regarding methodical approach, applied equipment and clinical or research implementations. The review is limited to the papers which were published over last 17 months (dated 2011 and 2012) in well recognised scientific journals. (Cardiol J 2012; 19, 5: 550-556)

“…We extended the assessment of the system complexity to analysis of the ICG signal, specifically to stroke volume (SV) determined from the ICG signals. The applications of hemodynamic parameters determined from ICG signals for the diagnosis of syncope are still a subject of discussion [14][15][16][17][18]. Therefore, our study was an attempt to assess the diagnostic usefulness of stroke volume (SV) complexity changes occurring simultaneously with changes in (RR-intervals) RRI-extracted from ECG, systolic blood pressure (sBP) and diastolic blood pressure (dBP) complexity for the diagnosis of syncope.…”

“…Our study utilized impedance cardiography, which is debated as an appropriate method to investigate absolute values of total peripheral resistance. However it is clear that impedance cardiography accurately measures relative changes in total peripheral resistance over a wide range of conditions [29,30]. Changes in total peripheral resistance in MSA were not compared with those in Parkinson's disease.…”

“…The advantages/disadvantages and application perspectives of the ICG method have been presented in several reviews [12,13,14]. Fellahi and Fisher [15] noted that, despite some disappointing results for the measurement of absolute values of cardiac output relative to some reference methods, ICG might be "interesting in guiding the spontaneous or induced changes in cardiac output and medical decision-making at the bedside".…”

“…It was also emphasised that an ambulatory version of ICG could be used to record transient events, which would be difficult or even impossible to visualize using other, established, ''classical'' methods. Some perspectives of ICG development were presented in Cybulski et al [12,13].…”
