Impacts of Solidago Gigantea, Prunus Serotina, Heracleum Mantegazzianum and Fallopia Japonica Invasions on Ecosystems

Abstract: Abstract. The world's biodiversity and ecosystems are threatened by the invasion of alien plant species. They have been found to impact the structure in function of ecosystems in temperate, tropical and subtropical areas (Holm et al., 1977;Pysek, 1997;Byers et al., 2002;Ehrenfeld, 2003). We reviewed studies to summarize the impact of four plant species invasions on European ecosystems: Solidago gigantea, Prunus serotina, Heracleum mantegazzianum and Fallopia japonica, because they are amongst a number of invas… Show more

“…Although travel is frequently an important conduit for the introduction of alien species (Anderson, Rocliffe, Haddaway, & Dunn, 2015;Koutika, Rainey, & Dassonville, 2011), with suitable education and guidance for visitors, or through volunteer tourism, the travel behavior of visitors can effectively control the spread of invasive species (Anderson et al, 2015;Hall, 2015). In fact, tourism is an excellent channel for lifelong learning (Broomhall, Pitman, Majocha, & Mcewan, 2010).…”

“…In this context, we found in the second survey that several locations formerly occupied by I. glandulifera were invaded by Solidago gigantea, which had been largely absent in the first survey (Essl and Hauser 2002). This species may cause severe effects on soil properties and species assemblages in Central European habitats (Güsewell et al 2006, Kowarik 2010, Koutika et al 2011.…”

“…The present state of floodplains in Central Europe is unfortunately closely related with often mass occurrence of invasive plants, primarily of the Fallopia congeners and Impatiens glandulifera, changing the local habitat conditions (Hejda & Pyšek, 2006;Hejda et al, 2009;Koutika et al, 2011). There is still a limited number of studies dealing with the impact of invasive plants on invertebrate species and/or their assemblages.…”
