Impacts of age and sex on retinal layer thicknesses measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography with Spectralis

Abstract: ObjectiveTo examine differences in individual retinal layer thicknesses measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) (Spectralis®) produced with age and according to sex.DesignCross-sectional, observational study.MethodsThe study was conducted in 297 eyes of 297 healthy subjects aged 18 to 87 years. In one randomly selected eye of each participant the volume and mean thicknesses of the different macular layers were measured by SD-OCT using the instrument's macular segmentation software.Mai… Show more

“…First, the possible effect of age on the outcomes needs to be addressed. Both the pRNFL and GCL are described to decrease with age, while this appears to be less pronounced for the RNFL [40,41]. As patients and controls in our cohort were well age matched, age is unlikely to be a factor for these betweengroup analyses.…”

“…One limitation of our study is that the controls were significantly older than the ACHM population by an average of 4.03 years. Previous literature has conflicting reports of the effect age has on ONL measurements, with some reporting no significant changes, 36,37 some reporting thinning, 38 and some reporting thickening. 39,40 The controls used in this study were significantly older than the ACHM patients; however, if decreasing ONL thickness with age is assumed, then accounting for this within our study only would have further increased our significance of ONL thickness between the two groups.…”

“…Another notable observation in this study was that the OPL increased in volume in the occult type. OPL thickening with age and in AMD has been reported recently [27,28]. This increase in OPL volume may represent a compensatory expansion as a consequence of ONL thinning.…”
