Most seedling production is carried out in protected environments influencing plant growth and development. The present study aimed to evaluate types of the cover of protected environments and reflective material in the production of seedlings of Hymenaea courbaril. The experiments were carried out in four protected environments: (A1) agricultural greenhouse covered with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film with 42% - 50% shading screen under the film; (A2) agricultural screen with an aluminized screen with 35% shading; (A3) agricultural screen with a black screen of 30% of shading, and (A4) agricultural screen with a black screen of 18% of shading. Production systems were tested with and without reflective material on the cultivation bench in each protected environment. The photosynthetically active radiation reflecting material used was the aluminized screen (Aluminet®). As there were no repetitions of the protected environments, each environment was considered an experiment. In each environment, the experimental design used was completely randomized, with four replications and five plants per plot. Among the variables analyzed, it was observed that the agricultural screen with a black screen (18% of shading) presented better quality seedlings. The system with reflective material presented higher values of the number of leaves and stem diameter.

The species Hymenaea courbaril L. (Jatoba) is widely used in the timber industry. However, its population was reduced due to high exploitation rate, being at risk of extinction. Therefore, production of seedlings of this species should be improved to meet the demand of reforestation programs. Given the above, this study evaluates the effect of Osmocote ® rates and root pruning on the growth of Jatoba seedlings transplanted into plastic bags. A randomized complete block design was used in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme, corresponding to five rates of Osmocote ® fertilizer (0.0; 2.0; 4.0; 6.0; and 8.0 g L-1) and three root pruning intensities (0%; 25%; and 50%). At 105 days after transplantation, the following were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total dry weight, height/stem diameter ratio, and Dickson quality index. Rates below 4.0 g L-1 or above 6.0 g L-1 decreased seedling quality. The most prominent variables in this study were plant height, total dry weight, and number of leaves of H. courbaril seedlings. Osmocote ® rates between 4.4 and 6.6 g L-1 combined with 25% root pruning provided the best results for the growth of transplanted Jatoba seedlings.

The Southwestern Region of the Brazilian Amazon is formed by forests dominated by bamboos. The genus Guadua is endemic to the Americas, and little is known about the genetic diversity and structure of species of this genus. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and structure of two native Guadua species in natural populations in the Southwestern region of the Brazilian Amazon. Therefore, the genetic diversity and structure of Guadua aff. chaparensis and Guadua aff. lynnclarkiae were evaluated with the use of microsatellite molecular markers (SSR). It was verified that the average genetic diversity for the populations studied was considered high (=0.5) compared to other species of bamboo. All populations had rare and private alleles, and none of them presented significant values of inbreeding. The populations were divergent (ST Ĝ = 0.46), resulting in a low apparent gene flow. The Bayesian analysis showed that among the 350 individuals analyzed, five groups (K=5) were formed, with little similarity among the groups (Populations), although two of them presented clonal individuals. According to the results obtained, it can be conclude that populations should be treated as having unique characteristics, mainly when accessed for management and for in situ and ex situ conservation studies.
