Impact of servant leadership on intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which perceived servant leadership of the supervisors impacts the intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction of the followers. Design/methodology/approach Servant leadership factor structure was evaluated by applying Liden et al.’s (2008) measure, and used the second-order model to test its relationship with the intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used to test data from 205 ind… Show more

“…These results indicate that SL positively affects the JS of teachers, enhancing the latter. The results also support our hypothesis H1 and are in line with those of previous studies like Al-Asadi et al (2019) and Cerit (2009). To examine the strength of the hypothesized model as a whole, the value of the squared multiple correlation ( R 2 ), which indicates the percentage of variance occurring in an endogenous variable due to an exogenous variable, is calculated and found to be 0.561.…”

“…However, some researchers criticize SL for being an unrealistic approach (Johnson, 2001) and others for it being a weak, naïve and passive approach (Bowie, 2000). Nevertheless, despite all the criticism, SL has gained popularity and recognition in recent years as a valid organizational leadership style, especially in educational organizations (Al-Asadi et al, 2019;Barnes, 2015;Gary, 2017;Jit et al, 2017;Laub, 1999;Adoramadan et al, 2020;Russell, 2001).…”

“…The extent of employees to be pleased and content with their work because of the activities and tasks assigned to them is called their intrinsic job satisfaction (Al‐Asadi, Muhammed, Abidi, & Dzenopoljac, 2019). Locke (1976) defines job satisfaction as an individual's pleasurable emotional state that results from his or her job experiences.…”

“…The degree of satisfaction of an employee regarding their job's external factors, including working environment, pay, coworkers, etc. is referred to as their extrinsic job satisfaction (Al‐Asadi et al, 2019). It can also be defined as the employee's positive emotional response to his or her job.…”

“…Servant leadership suggests organizations should seek the greater good of others and, in doing so, each element of the system will flourish. “In an organizational context, this orientation to serve is driven by leaders’ concerns about employee individual growth, empowerment, and development of mutual trust” (Al‐Asadi, Muhammed, Abidi, & Dzenopoljac, 2019, p. 473). Each part of a system works to enhance the system and is crucial to the day‐to‐day functioning.…”
