Impact of schizophrenia and schizophrenia treatment-related adverse events on quality of life: direct utility elicitation

Abstract: ObjectiveTo examine the impact of schizophrenia, its treatment and treatment-related adverse events related to antipsychotics, on quality of life from the perspective of schizophrenia patients and laypersons.MethodsHealth state descriptions for stable schizophrenia, extra pyramidal symptoms (EPS), hyperprolactinemia, diabetes, weight gain and relapse were developed based on a review of the literature and expert opinion. The quality of life impact of each health state was elicited using a time trade-off instrum… Show more

“…In addition, self evaluations of the constructs of quality of life by people with psychiatric disorders may lack reliability because of the presence of psychopathological symptoms as well as poor awareness of the disease (Browne et al 1996). Although, there are reports that people in stable phases of psychotic illnesses can reliably assess their health states even by using cognitively demanding methods (Briggs et al 2008), there are also consistent findings that people with schizophrenia in stable remission tend to overestimate their health utility than healthy people (Fan et al 2007) or professionals (Herrman et al 2002) would.…”

“…The health state utilities used in the model are presented in Table 3. The utilities of the different health states and the disutilities applied if ADEs occurred were taken from a direct utility elicitation study performed in the UK [34]. Patients that experienced treatment failure under risperidone treatment in the model would usually start a second-line treatment.…”
