Impact of Roadside Fixed Objects in Traffic Conditions

Abstract: Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) assumes that traffic flow rates are equally distributed between lanes, which is not always the case. Lane distribution and speed are influenced by lateral clearance on the roadsides. In Jordan, the absence of well-marked lanes and poor lane discipline results in under-utilizing of the freeway capacity. The objective of this study is to look into the impact of the presence of roadside objects on lane distribution and speed. Test sections were selected on six-lane freeway segments l… Show more

“…Existing literature [82] allows us to find a categorization of PTI values in terms of service reliability level developed for practical use by road users, as well as road managers. It is recommended that the thresholds be adapted to the nature of the road (Table 2) [67]. PTI is one of the variants of TTI, or travel time index, which can be calculated for any percentile (Equation ( 11)) .…”

“…Roadway efficiency and smooth traffic flow are affected by lateral clearance, lane distribution, and fixed objects in roads [4]. Side friction, referring to events or behaviors happening alongside or directly on the road, detrimentally affects the smooth flow of traffic, leading to several consequences including diminished road capacity and lane width, alterations in travel velocity, instant speed, Space Mean Speed (SMS), and Time Mean Speed (TMS), thereby influencing overall road performance [5]. This article embarks on an enlightening journey, drawing profound insights from a meticulous and exhaustive comprehensive traffic study.…”
