IzvlečekAbstract: An important aspect of wood-based panel usability, especially for construction, load bearing purposes or when in use for longer time, is its resistance against water. The resistance against water is related to type of woodbased panel, morphological characteristics of the constituents that panel is made of, and from the resin that was used for bonding. In an experiment we used four different wood-based panels, namely MDF (urea-formaldehyde adhesive), particleboard (urea-formaldehyde adhesive), OSB (melamine-urea-formaldehyde adhesive) and beech plywood (melamine-urea-formaldehyde adhesive). All panels were immersed into water and exposed to a humid climate for 90 days. Thickness swelling, compression shear strength and shear strength were determined after 1, 5, 30 and 90 days. The results showed that the highest strength decrease was observed at immersion into water. The lowest compression shear strength after immersion into water and exposure to a humid climate was determined for MDF. The occurrence of constituent failure due to mexposure to water was demonstrated through SEM analysis.Izvleček: Pomemben dejavnik uporabnosti lesnih ploščnih kompozitov pri gradnji in nosilnih konstrukcijah je odpornost le-teh proti delovanju vode. Odpornost proti delovanju vode je odvisna od vrste lesnega ploščnega kompozita, morfoloških lastnosti gradnika, iz katerega je plošča narejena, in lepila, uporabljenega za lepljenje. Za izvedbo raziskave smo uporabili štiri različne lesne ploščne kompozite in sicer MDF (urea-formaldehidno lepilo), iverno ploščo (urea-formaldehidno lepilo), OSB (melamin-urea-formaldehidno lepilo) in bukovo furnirno ploščo (melamin-urea-formaldehidno lepilo). Vse plošče so bile potopljene v vodo in izpostavljene vlažnim klimatskim pogojem. Določili smo debelinski nabrek, tlačni strig in strižno trdnost. Lastnosti so bile določene 1, 5, 30 in 90 dni po izpostavitvi. Največja sprememba trdnosti je bila ugotovljena pri preskušancih, potopljenih v vodo. Najnižja odpornost proti delovanju vode je bila ugotovljena pri MDF plošči. S SEM slikovno analizo smo prikazali nastanek razpok in porušitve zgradbe gradnikov.

The formaldehyde-based adhesives have always been chosen for manufacturer in the making of particleboard because of the cost. However, it has low moisture resistance and high water absorption. At the same time, formaldehyde-based adhesive also produced gaseous emission that can cause cancer and bronchial health. Meanwhile, the high water resistance, low moisture content and healthy to the human body nowadays becomes most important issues in the making of furniture for market. This research was discusses on the ability of Acacia tree as raw material and polyurethane (PU) as an adhesive for making the homogeneous particleboard. The aim of this research is to looking the impact of using different particle sizes from Acacia tree to the physical properties of the end product. This study also focuses on the potential of paraffin wax as a water repellent agent. The testing of physical properties was includes the thickness swelling (TS) testing, moisture content (MC), density and water absorption (WA testing). The size of Acacia particle was varied from x<2mm, 4mm>x>2mm and x>4mm. All particleboards produced was achieve the range of medium density according to the Japan Industry Standard (JIS). The results have shown that the value of the density and the particle size was influenced the result especially for the physical properties. From this research it is proved that the PU as a resin and sawdust of acacia tree with some specific size can be a good binder and material for the particle board industries in future. The paraffin wax also showed a great potential as a water repellent agent based on the reduction of water absorption of the particleboard. The particleboard with sizes between 2mm to 4mm proves better results compared to the smaller or bigger sizes of particle.

Summary Particleboard is a common material used in furniture manufacturing. In the present study, it is made from natural rubber wood in the form of coarse and fine particles which is glued with urea formaldehyde adhesive. Because of the cellulosic structure containing many hydroxyl groups, the particleboard becomes a hygroscopic product. The objective of the present study was to increase the water resistance of the particleboard by adding polyethylene (PE). Four grades of PE were selected and mixed with the rubber wood particles before forming as a three‐layer particleboard. Water absorption and thickness swelling were determined. The mechanical properties of the particleboard were evaluated including modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bond strength (IB) and screw holding force. It is found that the addition of 5 wt% PE decreased the thickness swelling at 2 h, e.g. from 19.27% to 13.18–17.16%, and at 24 h, e.g. from 23.81% to 16.88–21.04%. The presence of 5 wt% PE also decreased the water absorption at 2 h, e.g. from 56.17% to 42.01–52.98%, and at 24 h, e.g. from 70.89% to 58.63–66.76%. LDPE D209 and LDPE 2420T showed high potential in this application because they enhanced the water resistance and slightly increased the internal bond strength of the particleboard. MOR and MOE of particleboard could be ranked in the following order: D209 > control > 2420T.
