Impact of organophilic clay on rheological properties of gasoil-based drilling muds

Abstract: In this study, the impact of VG69 organophilic clay on the rheological properties of gasoil-based drilling muds (invert emulsions) was investigated. The flow curves of gasoil-based drilling muds as a function of the dose of VG69 organophilic clay were analyzed by the Casson model. The addition of VG69 organophilic clay with a quantity range between 0 and 5 g in gasoil-based drilling muds induces an increase in the yield stress and the viscosity at an infinite shear rate of drilling muds. It is also proven that… Show more

“…However, we retain a system that exhibits both delayed gel collapse and double-yield behaviour. 5 Our formulation comprises a 3 M (CaCl 2 ) brine emulsion in Clairsol 370 mineral oil with VG69 hydrophobically modified clay (amine treated bentonite) 17 together with sufficient Versamul™ emulsifier and Versacoat™ HF dispersant to ensure a stable system. The emulsion is 50% by volume internal (brine) phase generated by high-shear mixing at 6000 rpm using a Silverson mixer (L4RT) fitted with a square hole high shear screen.…”

“…Several rheological studies conducted show that, at elevated temperature and pressure, the Herschel–Bulkley and Casson models fit the flow behavior of OBDFs fairly well. 19 , 72 75 The Casson rheological model accurately predicts the drilling fluid behavior across low and high shear rates. In addition, it is preferred to the Herschel–Bulkley rheological model due to the correction factor that is introduced to the yield stress and PV.…”
