“…Our findings on the dose-response are consistent with the previous meta-analysis reporting that improvements in sleep quality were greater when the intervention’s frequency, duration, and total duration were achieved [ 10 ]. Several studies have shown that only MBM intervention longer than three months leads to significant improvements in metabolic profiles [ 101 , 102 ], proinflammatory cytokine [ 103 ], and mental health [ 104 , 105 , 106 ]. Furthermore, the inverted U-shaped hypothesis proposes that moderate-intensity exercise has the most significant cognitive benefits [ 107 , 108 ].…”

“…In turn, 74% of patients with anxiety disorders reported sleep disturbances [ 112 ]. Although the exact cause and effect between emotional disorders and poor sleep quality remain unknown, it has been shown that MBM has the potential to effectively treat both major depressive disorder [ 113 , 114 , 115 ] and sleep problems [ 81 , 103 ]. The alleviated negative moods often accompany improved sleep quality after practicing MBM [ 81 , 116 , 117 ].…”

“…As introduced in our previous article on the RCT (Ng et al, 2022), the IBMS and Qigong programs were offered twice, respectively, to around 50 participants per intervention in an activity hall, both aiming to promote people's physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual wellbeing. They were delivered between 2013 and 2014 under the same schedule with eight weekly 3-hour sessions (i.e., 24 contact hours in total) through initial short lectures and demonstrations, followed by practice and discussion in small groups of 10 to 12.…”

“…Not nearly as elegant or as difficult to execute as Ng et al’s (2022) RCT, but relying on the same inherent experimental logic, Herman’s study made use of available agency data routinely collected from depressed and anxiety clients who all received a standardized model of group cognitive behavior therapy (GCBT). The choice of group intervention was both evidence-based and more economical than individual CBT.…”

“…In fact, I was so impressed by the RCT itself that I nominated him and the paper for a Social Sciences Outstanding Research Award at The University of Hong Kong. Ng et al's (2022) exquisitely executed and arduously implemented, waitlist-controlled study began with screening over 1000 depressed Hong Kong adults and winnowed down to 281 who were eligible, then randomized for study purposes. Ultimately, no one was denied intervention which was either an Integrative Body-Mind-Spirit (IBMS) protocol or a series of Qigong treatments.…”
