Impact of hospitalisations for exacerbations of COPD on health-related quality of life

Abstract: Exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) impair health-related quality of life (HRQoL). It is unknown whether exacerbations requiring hospitalisation have an impact on HRQoL. 611 ambulatory COPD patients were prospectively identified. The average age (SD) was 65.5 (8.6), FEV(1) (SD) was 52% (14%) of the predicted value. All patients completed the Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF-36) questionnaire at the beginning of the study. Af… Show more

“…Different predictors have been associated with mortality depending on whether the endpoint is short or long term (1). Exacerbation is not only an established predictor of mortality in COPD (2) but is also considered an outcome (3) with its predictors (3) and consequences related to suffering exacerbations with different rate and severity, like decrement of pulmonary function (4) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) (5,6).…”

“…1 COPD is associated with progressive declines in respiratory function, mediated in part through frequent acute exacerbations as the disease worsens. 2,3 Declining respiratory function, in turn, leads to increased mortality risk, 4,5 reduced quality of life, [6][7][8] and greater risk of disability. 2,5,9,10 COPD also imposes a substantial economic burden.…”
