Abstract: The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) laboratory instruction approach has been used successfully over a decade to engage students in laboratory activities. SWH-based instruction emphasizes knowledge construction through individual writing and reflection, and collaborative learning as a group. In the SWH approach, writing is a core component of learning. Previous studies on the SWH approach have reported effective implementation of the SWH approach leads to an improvement in overall student academic performance a… Show more

“…It is this self-direction that facilitates a deeper learning that allows a student to critically analyse new ideas, linking it to already known principles and concepts using this to solve problems in a new unfamiliar context (Sims 2006). Thus, students engaging in Active learning methodologies especially where students need to participate and think about what they are doing can facilitate critical thinking and problem solving as reported by Tomey (2003), Gupta et al (2015), Olivares, Saiz and Rivas (2013), Oliver (2007) and White et al (2016)…”

“…21 According to Crowe and Youga (1986) 26 The benefits of the reflective writing are well demonstrated in the learning of chemistry subjects, especially in the practical sessions where students find inquiry-based instruction together with reflective writing in the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach helped them to appreciate the art of experiments, and at the same time helped students to be more aware and critical in their experimental study. 27 On top of these benefits, reflective writing also functioned as an assessment tool to track student learning progress in a non-examination setting.…”
