Impact of Cigarette Smoking on Papaverine-Induced Erection

Abstract: Owing to the vasoconstrictive effect of nicotine, smoking may potentially interfere in the results of the drug-induced erection test for papaverine hydrochloride. To investigate the effect of smoking on this test, 12 patients between 22 and 65 years old underwent the following protocol: phase 1--intracavernous injection of 100 mg. papaverine hydrochloride with measurement of intracavernous pressure by puncture with a 19 caliber butterfly needle attached to an aneroid manometer and phase 2--1 week after the ini… Show more

“…For example, cigarette smoking and toxic nicotine particles can inhibit smooth muscle relaxation of erectile tissue, thereby blocking the penile erection response. 22,23 One might propose that there exists a continuum, whereby mildamoderate venous leak leads to severe venous leak which leads to arteriogenic impotence, accounting for the similarly low cavernosal oxygen tension values in groups 1 and 2b. Alternatively, it may well be that our use of Doppler ultrasound may not have the degree of sensitivity needed to detect arterial lesions.…”

“…Nicotine infusion into dogs results in inhibition of cavemosal nerve stimulation-induced erections (Jeuneman et al 1987). Smoking 2 cigarettes is sufficient to inhibit penile erections induced by an intracorporeal injection of a low dose of papaverine (Glina et al 1988). Thus, tobacco smoking appears to be a potent cause of impotence.…”

“…Passive smoking also had a significant adverse effect on ED [9]. Smoking may cause ED by several mechanisms, including impairing intrapenile blood flow [29,30]. The link between smoking and ED is important since it may motivate some smokers to quit [29,31].…”
