Impact of Cedzyna Reservoir on Selected Physicochemical Parameters of River Water Quality (Swietokrzyskie Mountains, Poland)

Abstract: The monitoring of selected physicochemical parameters and chemical composition of water was conducted in 2017-2018 in the Lubrzanka river and the Cedzyna reservoir (Swietokrzyskie Mountains, Poland). The results indicate that the impact of reservoir on the quality of river water depends on natural characteristics of the catchment as well as on the present anthropogenic pressure. Retention of water in the reservoir caused seasonally diversified changes in analysed parameters, including an increase in water temp… Show more

“…In non-industrialised areas, the composition of sediments accumulating on the bottom, including the concentration of trace elements, depends on the lithological structure of the given catchment and climatic conditions, which determine the course of weathering processes and the activation of elements. The enrichment of sediments in potentially toxic metals observed in industrialised areas is primarily the result of anthropogenic activities: the way the catchment is used, discharge of wastewater and emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, which enter surface waters as a result of wet deposition and surface runoff [12,13]. Metals accumulated in bottom sediments can be released into water bodies through various chemical and biochemical processes or can be taken up directly from the sediments by benthic organisms [14].…”

“…In this regard, an investigation determined that in the valuation of surface waters, it's sometimes difficult to describe quality conditions due to the spatial variability of pollutants and the wide range of indicators that are identified through biological, physical and chemical parameters [9]. Also, the contamination of the urban rivers affects the f luvial ecosystem as well, which also lead to repercussion in the reservoirs that flow into the rivers again altering with higher impact the habitats and reducing the natural flow, scattering the living organism and affecting the physicochemical parameters [10].…”
