Impact of Building Loads on Cost Optimization Strategy for a Plug-in Electric Vehicle Operation

Abstract: Sustainable transportation growth will require wide adoption of electric vehicles in the near future. While the Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) usually shares the same meter in a building, the overall energy cost typically increases due to absence of any optimal strategy. Smart EV charging strategies can help to reduce the energy cost. The amount of cost reduction largely depends on the integrated building load. This paper presents the impact of small and large building loads on an EV charging strategy for diff… Show more

“…The difference with our situation is that we look at a company intending to shift to an EV fleet. The interaction between the energy consumption of a building and the EVs charged at the premisses is subject of [37]. V2G plays an important role, but PV energy generation is not taken into account.…”

“…EV charging is closely associated with the overall energy management when EV shares the same meter with the building. The charging characteristics vary depending on the size of the building load to follow the cost optimization strategy [17].In case I, while the EV uses level II charger, the impact is insignificant, when only one EV is charging. But when two EVs are being charged, the average demand of the building go up.…”

“…Indirect Controlled Bidirectional Strategy [35]; in this strategy, the power flow can be in both directions. The advantage of this approach is that smart coordination can be used to determine the optimal periods of charging to decrease the energy cost in addition to the advantages of the controlled bidirectional strategy, where the charging is indirectly affected by energy prices.…”
