Immunosuppressive and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Engineered Nanomaterials

Abstract: Nanoparticle interactions with various components of the immune system are determined by their physicochemical properties such as size, charge, hydrophobicity and shape. Nanoparticles can be engineered to either specifically target the immune system or to avoid immune recognition. Nevertheless, identifying their unintended impacts on the immune system and understanding the mechanisms of such accidental effects are essential for establishing a nanoparticle's safety profile. While immunostimulatory properties ha… Show more

“…76 In addition, for NMs quite frequently hypersensitivity and immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects are reported and less often autoimmunity. 77 Recently, the induction of protein citrullination by NMs was reported, which may potentially lead to triggering of autoimmune diseases. 78,79 Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved intracellular process 79 that has a leading role in inflammatory and The immune system and NMPs as a special group of NMs…”

“…To achieve these goals, many chemical and biomedical researchers have engineered nanoparticles to carry and locally deliver immunosuppressive agents. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] This can be considered ''indirect immunosuppression,'' where the nanoparticle solely serves as the delivery vehicle. 7 As an alternative, a small but prevailing body of literature is reassessing direct immunosuppression by nanoparticles to be exploited as a compliment for drug therapies or organ/tissue transplantation that otherwise would be rendered ineffective or rejected by the native immune response.…”
