Immunoglobulin‐containing cells in chick embryo urogenital tissues: A new site for early B lineage cells in endothermic vertebrates

Abstract: We have employed histological and immunofluorescent staining procedures in order to characterize the distribution of mu + B lineage cells in tissue sections prepared from developing chicken embryo urogenital tissues (UGTs) between 14 and 21 days of incubation. B lineage cells were observed in tissue sections prepared from developing UGTs, especially the mesonephros and its associated tissue, throughout the sample period. The highest densities of mu + B lineage cells were observed in tissue sections prepared fr… Show more

“…The pronephros in amphibians and fish is a well‐described site of hematopoiesis (Turpen et al ., 1981; Walmsley et al ., 1994; Bertwistle et al ., 1996; Gering et al ., 1998). IgM‐positive B cells are found in the mesonephros of the chick (Zettergren and Cutlan, 1992) and also in Rana pronephros and mesonephros (Zettergren, 1982). Macrophages are detected in UGRs of E11.5 mouse embryos (De Felici et al ., 1986), and as described above, hematopoietic progenitors are also found in the UGRs of E10 and E11 mouse embryos.…”

“…Avian and non-avian reptiles have also immunocompetent cells in their oviducts. T and B cells are present in chicken ovary where they are stimulated by estrogen (Barua & Yoshimura, 1999;Withanage et al, 2003;Zettergren & Cutlan, 1992). Other immunocompetent cells in the chicken oviduct include IgG+, IgA+ and CD3+ (Yoshimura, Okamoto, & Tamura, 1997).…”
