Immigrant entrepreneurship: A review and research agenda

Abstract: Immigrant entrepreneurship has become a phenomenon of global interest. This paper reviews existing immigrant entrepreneurship literature in order to map out the major streams of research and identify widely used theories, methods, and contexts. To do this, the authors have reviewed 514 articles from academic journals. This paper highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches that transcend boundaries. The development and adoption of different theoretical frameworks, the use of multi-level methods, and th… Show more

“…As far as theory is concerned, this study contributes to the literature on the development of entrepreneurial capacities, cross-cultural capabilities, adaptation, learning, and social capital. It enriches the literature on entrepreneurship and knowledge management by providing an empirical test of recently proposed networking links and entrepreneurial orientation theory (Dabić et al, 2020). Although the study confirms earlier findings, it provides several useful explanations on how acculturation and networking could influence the entrepreneurial capacity of African returnees from China.…”

“…In the context of our study, most of the participants were students at Chinese universities and, therefore, have higher qualification. Other studies show that because of their networks, companies started by returnee entrepreneurs share the characteristics of new international companies, specifically in terms of proactivity and the search for opportunities (Cuypers et al, 2020; Dabić et al, 2020; Madsen and Servais, 1997; Oviatt and McDougall, 1994).…”

“…Systematic review papers can be of several types, namely—Structured review focusing on widely used methods, theories and constructs (Rosado‐Serrano, Paul, & Dikova, 2018), Framework based (Paul & Benito, 2018), Hybrid‐ Narrative with a framework for setting future research agenda (Dabić et al, 2020), theory‐ based review (Gilal, Zhang, Paul, & Gilal, 2019) meta‐analysis (Knoll & Matthes, 2017), bibliometric review (Randhawa, Wilden, & Hohberger, 2016) and review aiming for model/framework development (Paul & Mas, 2019). In this study, a combination of bibliometrics and systematic literature review is followed, which is similar to the procedure adopted by Caputo, Marzi, Pellegrini, and Rialti (2018).…”

“…In general, there are four broad classifications of systematic reviews: domain-based, theory-based, method-based, and meta-analytical reviews ( Paul & Criado, 2020 ). The essence of these classifications is explained, as follows: Domain-based reviews are centered on a topical domain and can be conducted in five different ways: (1) structured reviews that focus on widely-used theories, constructs, contexts, and methods ( Canabal and White, 2008 , Hao et al, 2020 , Kahiya, 2018 , Paul and Feliciano-Cestero, 2020 , Paul and Singh, 2017 , Rosado-Serrano et al, 2018 ); (2) framework-based reviews that use a framework that scholars can either adopt from others or develop on their own ( Lim, 2020 , Paul and Benito, 2018 ); (3) bibliometric reviews that focus on statistics and trends ( Donthu et al, 2020 , Randhawa et al, 2016 , Vallaster et al, 2019 ); (4) hybrid reviews that integrate the tenets of two or more review types ( Dabić et al, 2020 , Lim, 2016 , Paul et al, 2017 , Kumar et al, 2019 ); and (5) theory development-based reviews that propose new theories, hypotheses, and/or propositions ( Lim, 2020 , Paul, 2019a , Paul and Mas, 2020 ). Theory-based reviews are focused on analyzing the role of a specific theory in a given field.…”
