Immediate Ridge Augmentation Using Autogenous Tooth Root as a Block Graft in a Periodontally Hopeless Extraction Site: A Pilot Study

Abstract: The aim of the our study was to assess the efficacy of autogenous tooth root as block bone graft in reconstructing the vertical and horizontal dimensions at periodontally hopeless extraction sites both clinically and radiographically. Methods: A total of 13 patients having a tooth with periodontally hopeless prognosis indicated for extraction were included in the study. Following atraumatic extraction the tooth was processed to create a decoronated cementum free dentin block which was used to augment the extra… Show more

“…Shejali et al (13) investigated the clinical and radiological efficacy of an autogenous tooth root used as a block bone graft in restoring vertical and horizontal dimensions at periodontally hopeless extraction sites. Findings of the present study are in accordance with the findings obtained by Shejali Jana et al regarding increase of the alveolar ridge width after using the dentin block graft in ridge augmentation.…”

“…The characteristics of the included articles are shown in Table 1. One study was a randomized clinical trial (Elraee et al, 2022), three investigations were controlled clinical trials (Schwarz et al, 2018(Schwarz et al, , 2022Xiao et al, 2019), and 4 were observational in their design (Li et al, 2021;Schwarz et al, 2019;Shejali et al, 2020;Wang et al, 2021). Articles were published between 2018 and 2022.…”

“…The total number of defects augmented with the dentin blocks was 132 (111 patients), while for the bone blocks, it was 64 (56 patients). The type of defect was horizontal in 4 articles (Elraee et al, 2022;Schwarz et al, 2018Schwarz et al, , 2019Wang et al, 2021), and both horizontal and vertical in the rest of the studies (Li et al, 2021;Schwarz et al, 2022;Shejali et al, 2020;Xiao et al, 2019). In 5 trials, single-tooth spaces were augmented (Elraee et al, 2022;Li et al, 2021;Schwarz et al, 2018Schwarz et al, , 2019Schwarz et al, , 2022, whereas single and multiple gaps were grafted in the other three publications.…”
