Image Enhancement and Segmentation Techniques for Detection of Knee Joint Diseases: A Survey

Abstract: Knee bone diseases are rare but might be highly destructive. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the main approach to identify knee cancer and its treatment. Normally, the knee cancers are pointed out with the help of different MRI analysis techniques and latter image analysis strategies understand these images. Computer-based medical image analysis is getting researcher's interest due to its advantages of speed and accuracy as compared to traditional techniques. The focus of current research is MRI-based medi… Show more

“…The raw CT scan image is preprocessed to enhance it for segmentation (Lakshmanaprabu, Mohanty, Shankar, Arunkumar, & Ramirez, ; Muslim, Khan, Hussain, Jamal, & Qasim, ; Saba, Rehman, Mehmood, Kolivand, & Sharif, ) and to increase the system's accuracy in the next step of thresholding. Normally, abnormalities are found in the contrast of the raw CT scan images due to which the objects in the image are not clearly visible as shown in Figure .…”

“…The aforementioned studies discuss the importance of lesion enhancement, which is the one, the primary steps for an accurate classification. For image segmentation, they mostly utilize well‐known techniques such as K‐means, watershed, Fuzzy C‐means, Otsu thresholding and to name a few (Abbas et al, , ; Husham, Alkawaz, Saba, Rehman, & Alghamdi, ; Jamal, Hazim Alkawaz, Rehman, & Saba, ; Norouzi et al, ; Saba et al, ,b; Waheed, Alkawaz, Rehman, Almazyad, & Saba, ). The saliency methods are also employed for lesion segmentation with improved performance.…”

“…On the same grounds, Somasekar () and Makkapati and Rao () addressed the segmentation of the parasites. However, single RBCs can also have noisy chromatin dots, single dots are not taken into consideration with the aid of experts as parasites, fake consequences might be pronounced and accuracy might be under threat (Saba, ; Saba et al, ,b; Sadad, Munir, Saba, & Hussain, ).…”
