-The increasing complexity of buildings has brought some difficulties for emergency response. When fires occur in a building, limited perception regarding the disaster area and occupants can increase the probability of injuries and damages. Thus, the availability of comprehensive and timely information may help understand the existing conditions and plan an efficient evacuation. For this purpose, Building Information Modeling (BIM) should be integrated with three sets of information: (1) occupancy that defines the type of space usage; (2) occupants' information; and (3) sensory data. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), as a standard of BIM, has the definitions for all areas, volumes, and elements of a building. IFC also has the basic definitions of sensor and occupant entities. However, these entities do not provide enough dynamic and accurate information for supporting emergency management systems. This paper aims to extend IFC for fire emergency real-time management using sensors and occupants' information. The specific objectives of this paper are: (1) extending IfcSensor entity for occupant's sensors; (2) adding new attributes to IfcOccupant to support emergency response operations and defining a new entity for occupancy; and (3) defining the relationships between sensors, occupants, occupancy, time series, and building components in the context of building evacuation. The feasibility of the proposed method is discussed using a case study.

In construction industries, performance evaluation is used as a systematic way of judging project performance. However, it is still a daunting task for project managers to accurately and timely record of the current status on the site due to the project's dynamic nature. In addition, there is no effective mechanism available yet to integrate information among all the project participants. In view of this, a construction project performance evaluation mechanism based on BIM model will be proposed in this research. Firstly, a systematic analysis will be conducted to analyze the current process and structure of the evaluation of construction projects. Based on existing IFC/BIM, the current IFC data structure will be extended accordingly and BIM graphic objects will be created to describe project information. Using graphic objects to describe relative project information, they form a reliable resource for project performance evaluation. Finally, the construction project performance evaluation mechanism will be developed to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this article is to study the description and extension of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard in the construction schedule management, which achieves the information exchange and sharing among the different information systems and stakeholders, and facilitates the collaborative construction in construction projects.Design/methodology/approach: The schedule information processing and coordination are difficult in complex construction projects. However, Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides a platform for exchanging and sharing information among information systems and stakeholders based on the IFC standard.Through analyzing the plan, implementing, check and control, the information flow in the schedule management is reflected based on the IDEF0. According to the IFC4, the information models for the schedule management are established, which not only includes the each aspect of the schedule management, but also includes the cost management, the resource management, the quality management, the risk management and so on. Findings:The information requirement for the construction schedule management can be summarized into three aspects: the schedule plan information, the implementing information and the check and control information, and three aspects can be described through the existing -615-Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management -http://dx.doi.org/10.3926/jiem.1283 and extended entities of the IFC4, and different information models are established respectively. Originality/value:The main contribution of the article is to establish construction schedule management information models, which achieve the information exchange and sharing in the construction project, and facilitate the development of the application software to meet requirements of the construction project.
