“…Internal consistency was reduced by the nature of the first three items, as would be expected under equity principles. That is, being underbenefited in, say, doing housework, shouldn’t be strongly correlated with being underbenefited in working for pay or spending money, since couples tend to make offsetting contributions in order to keep the relationship equitable (DeMaris, 2007; DeMaris & Longmore, 1996). The correlation between the Hatfield and Sprecher items, on the other hand, is .55 for women and .47 for men.…”

“…Each ratio was of the form: husband’s contribution/wife’s contribution. Logged contribution ratios have been used in previous studies to tap relative objective contributions in marriage (DeMaris, 2007; DeMaris & Longmore, 1996). Educational attainment ranged from “less than 7 years” (1) to “graduate/professional degree” (7).…”

“…If necessary, one-half was added to the numerator and denominator when creating the ratio to prevent undefined logs. This approach has been used in previous work to measure husband’s relative contributions in marriage (e.g., DeMaris, 2007; DeMaris & Longmore, 1996). The log of the ratio of husband’s to wife’s weekly hours spent in paid labor was the paid labor ratio .…”

“…Father’s contributions to housework and childcare during the transition to parenthood should serve to reduce the amount of parenting stress experienced by mothers. Women’s sense of the fairness of the household division of labor has been found to be elevated when fathers both take responsibility for, and do, a larger share of the childcare tasks (DeMaris & Longmore, 1996; Hochschild, 1989). His participation relieves her of some of the burden of childcare.…”

“…We examined data from the fourth interview of the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS) in which men and women, ages 18-24, (n=422) were currently dating. We build on prior studies on marital and cohabiting (e.g., Coyne, Thompson, & Palmer, 2002; DeMaris & Longmore, 1996; Whiffen & MacDonald, 2001; Whisman, 2001; Whisman & Uebelacker, 2009), as well as dating dynamics (e.g., Davila, Steinberg, Kachadourian, Cobb, & Fincham, 2004; Joyner & Udry, 2000; Mak & Marshall, 2004; Quatman, Sampson, Robinson, & Watson, 2001), by exploring relationship qualities during emerging adulthood that likely influenced depressive symptoms. Other studies have not empirically evaluated the role of mattering in tandem with specific relationship qualities, but this may be particularly important in the early adult years as intimacy becomes central to identity formation and well-being.…”
