Identifying Economic and Clean Strategies to Provide Electricity in Remote Rural Areas: Main-Grid Extension vs. Distributed Electricity Generation

Abstract: The policy decision of extending electric power transmission lines to connect a remote area to a primary grid vs. developing local electricity generation resources must be informed by studies considering both alternatives’ economic and environmental outcomes. Such analysis must also consider the uncertainty of several factors such as fuel prices, the cost and performance of renewable and conventional power generation technologies, and the value of environmental benefits. This paper presents a method for this a… Show more

“…However, there is a major drawback of solar energy that needs attention, namely its intermittent nature or not always available all the time. The sun only shines during the day, and energy production from PLTS will stop at night or during bad weather conditions [14]. To overcome this deficiency, it is necessary to add energy infrastructure that can store energy, such as an Energy Storage System (ESS) or batteries.…”

“…The total electricity generation cost will be reduced by approximately a little less than one-third of the total cost of generation (Mirbarati et al, 2022). Grid performance is enhanced by the involvement of distributed generation in the national grid as shown in a case study of Saudi Arabia (Alqahtani and Patino-Echeverri, 2023). For power flow calculations, the authors combined semi-invariant and Gram-Charlier series expansions (Fu et al, 2020).…”

“…One of the main obstacles in the development of isolated regions is the lack of developed infrastructure, primarily in the energy sector [2]. Insufficient power supply and isolated electric systems limit the potential for implementing various energy-intensive industrial and infrastructure projects: from mining and metallurgy to consumer supply and seawater desalination [3,4].…”
