Identifying Challenges in the Development of Subsea Petroleum Production Systems

Abstract: Abstract. There are many challenges associated with development of offshore petroleum fields. Subsea production facilities are increasingly used in the petroleum industry as the technology has matured and quality increased. The use of subsea technology has advantages as well as challenges. Based on a literature review this paper identifies some if the development challenges related to the design and operation of subsea petroleum production facilities.

“…118−120 The development of subsea systems needs to meet the design specifications and requires understanding of the oil production process, the possible environmental risks, reservoir flow, seabed conditions, costs, and performance requirements. 22 Moreover, the design of subsea equipment introduces several challenges, because installations are different from each other in terms of reservoir fluid composition, sea depth, pressure and flow, distance to shore, seabed topography, etc. As mentioned previously, some subsea separators and hydrocyclones are applied technologies, while subsea CFUs are still in the development stage.…”

“…CFUs are a relatively recent advancement in the field of flotation and have largely been omitted in the literature. Moreover, we emphasize the recent improvements of subsea separation technology, as subsea petroleum production and processing facilities are increasingly used . Next, the collisions and attachment mechanisms of gas bubbles and oil droplets are outlined.…”

“…Operators most often sign agreements and contracts with service companies specializing in subsea intervention to have vessels, equipment and spare parts ready for preventive maintenance activities [21]. Also, unexpected failures should be included in the strategy and agreements.…”
