“…To examine the petroleum-derived aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic sulfur compounds a silica gel separation scheme was employed (9). The particulate and soluble fractions were evaporated to dryness on 45 mL of silica gel (activated at 225 "C for 48 h) on a rotary evaporator at 45 "C. The silica gel was charged to a 67.5 X 20 cm i.d.…”

“…The smoke extract in a small volume of iso-octane was applied to an activated silicic acid column ( 15 g, 1 X 20 cm) packed with iso-octane. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were eluted first with 400 ml of iso-octane and the aromatic fraction containing polycyclic hydrocarbons was eluted with 150 ml of benzene (Rosen et al, 1955). The aromatic fraction in benzene was concentrated to about 0.5 ml by aspiration, and the remainder of the benzene was carefully evaporated under a weak stream of nitrogen at room temperature.…”

“…Similarly, in 1954, chemists of Standard Oil Company (Schmauch andGrubb, 1954) were also analyzing re®nery wastewaters for phenols down to 10 ppb using a spectrophotometric method. By 1955, Rosen and Middleton (1955) had re®ned their 1951 analytical procedures speci®cally for organics in petroleum re®nery wastewaters. These studies by both industry and the government indicate a growing appreciation for understanding the organic content of industrial and natural waters.…”
