Identification of intervention categories for aquatic physical therapy in pediatrics using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Children and Youth: a global expert survey

Abstract: HighlightsDue to the unique properties of the water-based environment, a range of categories may be treated. This study reveals the areas of functioning and disability most commonly targeted by aquatic physical therapists.Prior authors have performed Delphi studies to determine the categories related to specific diagnoses, not categorizing interventions. This guide could be included in goal setting for a given condition. This may enable aquatic physical therapists to develop treatment-based classification systems… Show more

“…Our results not coincide with the response rates of prior studies, which range from 59% to 90%. 18 We expected a low response rate, considering the time expenditure, the various stages and the fact that only more recently the use of the ICF has been a matter of greater attention in the area. “…Indeed, several Delphi studies have used this cut-off point for practical reasons. 18 A number between 15 and 30 participants is considered sufficient for consensus. 19 The literature indicates an abstention number of 30---50% from the first to the second stage.…”

“…However, the outcome measures of functioning that should be routinely used by physiotherapists working in the specific health-care context of APT have not been widely studied. In previous work by our group [25,26], we identified the relevant intervention categories available when using CY (‘what to measure’) from the perspective of parents and experts, to create an APT core set. The following step would be to identify which outcome measures (‘how to measure’) align with these categories, and also with the main neuromuscular and neurodevelopmental disorders core sets, such as for CP, ASD, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) [27].…”

“…A water-based exercise environment or aquatic training is used by health professionals for the maintenance or improvement of aerobic performance, while limiting some uncomfortable symptoms of exercise exertion. 15,16 It is believed that the properties of an aquatic environment such as buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity, and warmth reduce joint loading and minimize impediments to exercise found in land-based training such as pain, balance, and movement difficulties. 17,18 In lessening the impact of these impediments, the training dose that is tolerated is likely to be greater, making vigorous training intensities more feasible and in turn improving the likelihood of increasing aerobic performance.…”
