Identification of immunogenic cell wall‐associated proteins of Streptococcus suis serotype 2

Abstract: Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is a porcine and human pathogen with adhesive and invasive properties. The absence of suitable vaccine or virulent marker can be the bottleneck to control SS2 infection. An immunoproteome-based approach was developed to identify candidate antigens of SS2 for vaccine development. Hyperimmune sera, convalescent sera, and control sera were analyzed for reactivity by Western Blot against SS2 cell wall-associated proteins (WAPs) separated by 2-DE. A total of 34 proteins were iden… Show more

“…Considering the Gal␣1-4Gal specificity of S. suis strains able to cause meningitis and the presence of Gal␣1-4Gal oligosaccharides in microvascular endothelial cells, the SadP adhesin may be a potential target for antiadhesion drugs and vaccines. Indeed, SadP (SSU0253) has recently been shown to be a highly antigenic protein, to be expressed by most type 2 S. suis strains, and to induce protective antibodies in mice (62,63).…”

“…Todas as proteínas até então não têm sido descritas para outras riquétsias, sugerindo que representam proteínas imunologicamente reativas exclusivas de R. parkeri. No entanto, a antigenicidade de IF-2 e FtsZ tem sido relatado em outros trabalhos com diferentes espécies bacterianas de diferentes gêneros (Boonjakuakul et al 2007, Zhang et al 2008.…”

“…Another example of SERPA combined with in silico analysis, applied to B. anthracis, has permitted the identification of a set of 84 immunogenic proteins that are expressed in vivo, providing a pool of potential candidates for vaccine development and diagnostic and therapeutic purposes (76). This approach has also been applied to select immunoreactive proteins from Klebsiella pneumoniae (77), Streptococcus pyogenes (78), S. pneumoniae (79), Streptococcus suis (80), and Clostridium difficile (81).…”
