Abstract: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of blindness in developed countries, and the molecular pathogenesis of early events in AMD is poorly understood. Senescence-accelerated OXYS rats develop AMD-like retinopathy. The aim of this study was to explore the differences in retinal gene expression between OXYS and Wistar (control) rats at age 20 d and to identify the pathways of retinal cell death involved in the OXYS retinopathy initiation and progression. Retinal mRNA profiles of 20-day-old OXYS… Show more

“…First, using the annotated protein names, a list of gene symbols for these proteins was retrieved from FlyBase 3 . Second, the gene symbols were transferred to GeneMANIA for network visualization with the default parameters and algorithms, and proteins that failed to be incorporated into the network were deleted (Telegina et al, 2015;Yang et al, 2018). Third, the FC level was assigned to the corresponding proteins, and the overall pathways and functional clusters were identified in Cytoscape (ver.…”

“…These changes correspond to the dynamics of STAT3 expression (Figure 5a). Other members of this family, STAT5 and 6, are involved in differentiation and cell survival process [91,92]. STAT5 has pleiotropic functions for the regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.…”

“…The STAT5 transcription factors are essential for both lymphocyte development and acute immune responses [95]. STAT5 is a regulator of cyclin D, Myc, and Bcl-2 in nonneuronal cells and thus is involved in the prevention of apoptosis [92]. It has been shown that STAT5 and STAT6 antiapoptotic cascades [91,94], and antiapoptotic activity of the JAK/ STAT5 pathway are carried out through Bcl-2 [96].…”
