Metronidazole susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteria associated with periodontal disease

“…The higher MIC value for this species, was 1 dilution above that reported by Sutter et al (1983), who, however tested all black pigmented bacteria without species distinction. If we consider our maximal MIC 90 value as 1 mg/ml, we can propose that 87% of strains are sensitive to metronidazole, which is in agreement with others (Sutter et al 1983, Baker et al 1983, Abu Fanas et al 1991, Pankuch et al 1993).…”

“…Metronidazole MIC values obtained in the present study seem to be not very different when using Etest A or agar dilution. Globally, if we consider a 2-dilutions step, whatever the strain and incubation time, 93% of trials gave results similar and comparable to those obtained by others (Sutter et al 1983, Baker et al 1983, Abu Fanas et al 1991, Citron et al 1991, Pankuch et al 1993, Pajukanta et al 1993, with the exception of the study by Walker et al (1985). In spite of its relatively high cost, Etest A can thus be recommanded as a reliable, rapid and simple method for metronidazole MIC assessment for P.intermedia, P.gingivalis and P.micros.…”
