Abstract: ABSTRACT. MicroRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) encompass a class of small non-coding RNAs that often negatively regulate gene expression. miRNAs play an essential role in skeletal muscle, determining the proper development and maintenance of this tissue. In comparison to other organs and tissues, the full set of muscle miRNAs and its expression patterns are still poorly understood. In this report, a chicken skeletal muscle miRNA library was constructed, and the expression of selected miRNAs was further characterized durin… Show more

“…Muscle specific miRNAs, including miR-1/206 and miR-133b, are well characterized to play crucial roles in muscle development in human and mouse [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. A previous study demonstrated that miR-206 was involved in the muscling phenotype in growth-selected chicken lines [ 25 ]. However, little is known about miR-206 promoter and its effects on miRNA expression at the transcriptional level in birds.…”

“…To date, the major progress on the way of clinical utility of miR-221/222 in cardiovascular medicine was achieved in the field of stem cell therapy for cardiovascular diseases. The miR-221/222 cluster is critically involved in the regulation of myogenesis and function of myocardium [ 173 , 182 184 ]. Both in myoblasts and myotubules, miR221/222 expression was shown to be under control of the Ras-MAPK pathway and inversely correlated with levels of p27 Kip1 , a common target for these miRNAs [ 182 ].…”

“…In organisms, a miRNA may act on multiple target genes or multiple miRNAs can regulate a target gene, where these miRNAs form a network that regulates biological activities. Hence, recent research into the functions of miRNAs has focused on the miRNA regulatory networks associated with the formation of animal traits, although most studies have been limited to the identification and expression profiling of miRNAs as well as determining the functions of individual miRNAs . So, we lack an overall understanding of how miRNAs regulate muscle development and fat deposition in chickens.…”

“…However, there have long been controversies about the meat quality and the nutritional value between juvenile and old-aged hens3637. Over the past few years, most studies have focused on the skeletal muscle of chicken before sexual maturation383940. However, until now, the epigenetic mechanisms responsible for breast meat quality between the juvenile and later laying-period hens remained poorly understood.…”

“…miRNAs are a class of small ncRNAs that often negatively regulate gene expression, and some play essential roles in chicken skeletal muscle, e.g., miR-125b, miR-221, and miR-206, miRNA-133a, and miR-1a (Andreote et al 2014;Wang et al 2012). The function of lncRNAs is generally less conserved than that of miRNAs, and lncRNAs act via different mechanisms to play important roles during muscle differentiation.…”
