Trichophoromyia iorlandobaratai (Diptera: Psychodidae), a new phlebotomine species from the Brazilian Amazonia

Abstract: Trichophoromyia iorlandobaratai sp. n. Vasconcelos dos Santos, Santos Neto, Sánchez Uzcátegui & Galardo is described and illustrated on the basis of male specimens collected in the municipality of Itaituba, Pará State, Brazilian Amazonia. This species can be differentiated from other morphologically similar species within Trichophoromyia by means of the male characters such as the ratio between the aedeagal ducts/sperm pump, shape and distribution of setae in the gonocoxite, a… Show more

“…Among them, several genera are present in Latin America that have been identified to be naturally infected with Leishmania and others that have the potential to transmit the parasite such as Lutzomyia, Pintomyia, Warileya, Psychodopygus, Nissomyia, Thrychophoromya, Psathyromyia in contrast to Phlebotomus sp. which are insect vectors in South Asia, Europe and Northeast Africa (Zorrilla et al, 2017;Vasconcelos Dos Santos et al, 2019).…”

“…The number of new Trichophoromyia species described has been increased in the last years. (6) Most of these descriptions were provided from specimens collected in environmentally impacted ecotopes of the Amazon Basin, where ACL is considered a prioritised disease to be monitored in vector surveillance programs. Numerical dominance in light-trap captures, permis-siveness for Leishmania infection and spatiotemporal congruence with ACL epidemiology are usually variables considered for drawing attention to the possible involvement of Trichophoromyia in ACL enzootics.…”

“…(3,4) In the Americas, a total of 541 species -524 current and 17 fossil species -have been described, and they are grouped into supra-specific categories (genera, subgenera, groups, and series of species). (5,6) Among these, almost more than 20 species are considered vectors of leishmaniasis in the New World. This relatively small number of vectors is the function of a number of ecological, physiological and biochemical factors inherent to both insects and parasites.…”

“…ubiquitalis (Mangabeira). Forty-four species of Trichophoromyia have been reported in the New World (Vasconcelos dos Santos et al 2019), most of which are geographically restricted to the Amazon Basin. Several females of Trichophoromyia are isomorphic; therefore, identification is usually based on external characteristics of the males (Young and Duncan 1994).…”
