Abstract: Sporotrichosis is the main subcutaneous mycosis in Brazil, and is caused by Sporothrix schenckii and allied species. Sporothrix propagules present on soil and plant debris may be traumatically inoculated into the cutaneous/ subcutaneous tissues of the warm-blooded host. An alternative route involves direct animal-animal and animal-human transmissions through deep scratches and bites of diseased cats. Sporotrichosis is much more common than previously appreciated with several cases emerging over the years espec… Show more

“…Different authors reported the isolation of Sporothrix from environmental sources [1, 16, 25]. Surprisingly, nearly all of the 175 healthy cats inhabiting Rio de Janeiro endemic areas did not harbor the fungus either in their oral cavity or their nails, although the great majority of them had prior contact with soil or plants [1, 25, 26].…”

“…Thus, it is clear that sporotrichosis has reached an epidemic magnitude in the only Brazilian state wherein notification is compulsory and the disease is considered an important zoonosis [8, 13, 15]. Additionally, although in reduced numbers compared to Rio de Janeiro, sporotrichosis zoonotic transmission by domestic felines have been reported in other Brazilian states [16]. Given its relevance, routine laboratory procedures for investigating its etiological agent are well established and include the in vitro isolation of Sporothrix spp., identification of these fungi based on their macro and microscopic features, and in vitro thermal conversion techniques.…”

“…It is found worldwide in temperate, but also tropical and subtropical areas. Larger outbreaks of sporotrichosis have been reported [24]. Disseminated disease involving the central nervous system may occur in immunosuppressed patients (e.g.…”
