I See What You Are Doing: Student Views on Lecturer Use of Tablet PCs in the Engineering Mathematics Classroom

Abstract: Mathematically intensive engineering subjects at a tertiary level have traditionally been taught in classroom environments using whiteboards or blackboards. This paper reports on student views of the effectiveness of board and alternative technologies used within existing classroom contexts. Students in this study revealed a strong preference for the use of pen-enabled Tablet PCs as a delivery technology. The maintenance of a handwritten approach, combined with ready visibility of material, support for inclusi… Show more

“…There are a number of things that affect whether a student views the technology as well-utilised. The most obvious is the lecturer's skill in using a technology, which is again in agreement with the literature (Maclaren et al, 2017). This is the first thing a student sees, and if the student feels the lecturer is failing to use a piece of technology, they will have little patience with both the lecturer and the technology.…”

“…This view can be affected by the lecturer's use or misuse of a technology. Students feel that it is the role of the lecturer to be competent using the technology (Khoo et al, 2010;Maclaren et al, 2017), and where this is not the case, students can feel that the technology is not useful to them, presumably because they haven't seen effective use modelled well.…”

“…Tablet computers are a development for laptop computers, and the tablet computer is accompanied by a keyboard that can be detached or folded, and it may be without a keyboard, so there is the latter type with touch-sensitive screens with a thin pen for data entry (Cuhadar, 2014), and these devices run on Windows XP It has the advantage of recognizing the fingerprint, and it also has the ability to use infrared rays to transmit data from a nearby location (Maclaren et al, 2017).…”

“…In the educational research field, at different levels (primary, secondary and higher education), several projects have been reported in the literature, pointing at learning contributions and tools potentials, evaluating benefits and limitations facing the use of technological resources (CHRISTENSEN, JHONSON, HORN 2008;HUSSAIN, SULEMAN, DIN, SHAFIQUE, 2017;IRBY, BORDA, HAUPT, 2018;MACLAREN, WILSON, KLYMCHUK, 2017). Regarding chemistry, LOCATELLI, TRENTIN (2015) highlight the use of these resources as to the possibility of overcoming difficulties resulting from the learning of complex and abstract concepts.…”
